From discovering one of the smoothest blanco tequilas I've ever tasted to meeting passionate makers and celebrating Mexican culture, Arte Agave Austin was about so much more than tequila.

As a spirits enthusiast and beverage consultant, I love events that introduce me to something new. And Arte Agave Austin 2026 did exactly that!

Held on September 18 at Distribution Hall in East Austin, Arte Agave brought together tequila and mezcal producers, craft cocktails, Mexican cultural performances, and a vibrant marketplace of artisans and small businesses.

With over 100 agave spirits advertised for tasting, there was plenty to explore. But what made the evening memorable for me wasn't simply the number of tequilas available. It was discovering the craftsmanship, heritage, and people behind them.

Here are a few of my favorite discoveries from the evening.

Discovering Artisanal Tequilas at Arte Agave

I've tasted my fair share of tequila, but Arte Agave introduced me to several artisanal expressions that I hadn't experienced before. One of the things I appreciate most about spirits tastings is the opportunity to explore different production styles side by side. From bright, agave-forward blancos to more complex aged expressions, there is so much variation within tequila.

And when you're able to speak with the people representing these spirits, you begin to appreciate just how much goes into every bottle. For me, that was one of the biggest highlights of Arte Agave.

El Mexicano: My Favorite Tequila of the Night

Let's talk about my absolute favorite discovery: El Mexicano Blanco Tequila.

And I don't say this lightly — it was one of the best blanco tequilas I've ever tasted.

What immediately stood out was how incredibly smooth it was, with a beautiful, natural agave sweetness. It didn't need a mixer or a complicated cocktail to impress me. I genuinely enjoyed tasting it on its own.

After the event, I was curious to learn more about what made it so special.

El Mexicano is a family-owned tequila produced by the Bañuelos family in Arandas, Jalisco. With three generations of tequila-making knowledge behind the brand, their production approach emphasizes the natural character of Blue Weber agave. They use mature agave, slow cooking, extended open-air fermentation, and custom-designed pot stills.

Their Blanco is unaged, allowing the agave to remain front and center. The brand describes notes of cooked agave, sweet citrus, and an herbal finish. Knowing more about the production process made me appreciate my tasting experience even more.

My verdict: If you enjoy sipping blanco tequila, El Mexicano is absolutely a brand worth exploring. It was easily my standout spirit of the evening.

Celebrating Women in Tequila: Leyenda de México

Another memorable encounter was with the women behind Leyenda de México.

The tequila itself was pleasant, but what really caught my attention was the story behind the brand.

Leyenda de México is led by master tequilera Melly Barajas, who has built an all-female tequila operation in an industry traditionally dominated by men.

As someone who works in the spirits and beverage industry, I love seeing women create space for themselves in every part of the business, from production to leadership. It was wonderful to see that representation at Arte Agave. Sometimes, the most memorable part of a tasting isn't just what's in your glass. It's learning about the people who made it possible.

Craft Cocktails Featuring Campo Azul 1940

Of course, I couldn't attend a tequila festival without exploring the craft cocktails! While I love tasting spirits neat to understand their individual character, I also enjoy seeing how bartenders interpret them through cocktails.

One of my favorite cocktail experiences of the evening featured Campo Azul 1940. It was a fun reminder that tequila can be incredibly versatile behind the bar, and that a well-crafted cocktail can showcase the spirit rather than simply disguise it. As someone who develops cocktail recipes, I always leave experiences like this with fresh inspiration.

Casa Maestri: Another Notable Tequila Discovery

Another name worth mentioning from the evening was Casa Maestri.

Founded by Michael and Celia Maestri, this family-owned distillery is based in Tequila, Jalisco, and has built its reputation around premium tequila production.

Casa Maestri combines traditional tequila-making heritage with modern distilling practices and has developed a broad portfolio of tequila expressions. I particularly appreciated having the opportunity to explore a brand with such a strong focus on production and craftsmanship.

I made this Bewitched Margarita using the Casa Maestri Anejo tequila.

Events like Arte Agave make it easier to discover and compare producers you might otherwise overlook while browsing the shelves of a liquor store.

If you're interested in exploring different tequila expressions, I've put together a curated selection of spirits on Rounds featuring bottles that have caught my attention.

Beyond Tequila: Local Artisans and Small Businesses

One of my favorite surprises at Arte Agave was the artisan marketplace.

I loved that the event created space for small businesses alongside established spirits brands.

A particular standout was Villa 318, with its beautiful hand-painted tequila decanters and glasses.

As someone who loves hosting and collecting interesting barware, I was immediately drawn to the craftsmanship and colorful designs. Villa 318 offers handcrafted Mexican-inspired barware, including hand-painted ceramic tequila decanter sets made in Mexico.

These are the kinds of pieces that turn a home bar into something personal and meaningful.

Beyond Villa 318, there were several other artisans and small businesses showcasing their creations.

It was lovely to see so many independent makers gathered under one roof, with the opportunity to share their work with a crowd that had come together to celebrate Mexican spirits and culture.

One thing that makes a tequila tasting more enjoyable is having the right glassware. Whether you're exploring blanco, reposado, or añejo, a proper tasting glass helps you appreciate the aromas and flavors. I've shared some of my favorite tequila tasting glasses and barware on Amazon if you're planning a tasting at home.

A Celebration of Mexican Culture: Dancing Catrinas and Catríns

And then there was the entertainment!

One of the most memorable sights at Arte Agave was the towering Día de los Muertos-inspired performers dancing through the crowd. Dressed as La Catrina and El Catrín, these stilt walkers were impossible to miss! From the elaborate skeletal makeup and traditional sombrero to the vibrant, rainbow-colored ruffled dress, every detail was a celebration of Mexican artistry and tradition.

The performers brought so much energy, color, and personality to the evening. Watching them move through the venue was easily one of my favorite moments beyond the tequila tastings. It's experiences like these that make Arte Agave more than just a spirits festival. It's an opportunity to experience elements of Mexican culture, creativity, and heritage alongside the agave spirits that bring everyone together.

Is Arte Agave Austin Worth Attending?

Absolutely — especially if you're curious about tequila, mezcal, and Mexican culture.

What I appreciated most about Arte Agave was the variety of experiences available in one place.

You could spend the evening discovering new agave spirits, chatting with brand representatives, enjoying craft cocktails, exploring artisan products, and watching cultural performances.

For spirits enthusiasts, it's an opportunity to discover producers and expressions that may not be familiar.

For cocktail lovers, it's a chance to experience different interpretations of agave spirits.

And for anyone who simply enjoys cultural festivals and supporting small businesses, there's plenty to appreciate beyond the tasting glasses.

My advice? Come curious, take your time, ask questions, and don't feel pressured to taste everything. A few meaningful discoveries are far more memorable than rushing through dozens of pours.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Tequila Festival

If I had to choose one spirit to remember from Arte Agave Austin 2026, it would undoubtedly be El Mexicano Blanco.

But my favorite part of the event was the experience as a whole. From discovering new artisanal tequilas and meeting women making their mark in the industry to admiring handcrafted barware and watching traditional performances, the evening offered a little bit of everything I love about spirits culture.

Great spirits tell stories. And the best tasting experiences give us a chance to discover those stories firsthand.

Arte Agave Austin did exactly that.

Have you tried El Mexicano Tequila, or attended an Arte Agave festival? I'd love to know which tequila or mezcal surprised you the most!
