Movie Review | Talvar

On the usual morning of 16th May 2008, when we were rushing to our daily work or college or school, a family in Noida stood devasted on the sudden death of the youngest member of their family. We were hooked to the television and the newspapers for the next few weeks, closely following the murder case and guessing about murderer while the media, as always, shadowed the real facts and helped people to form a biased opinion about the deceased, her parents and, sadly, their morals while bringing her up. The case changed its course every week. We probably stopped following the case after a month or two, but that shady night of May 2008 changed the whole life of this dentist family.

The media, the police, the legal system and the judicial system of this country has gone to the dogs. And this movie, Talvar , has shown exactly this thing. If you have followed the case closely, you will realize that how the sequence of events has been portrayed as reported in the public testimony. The direction and the screenplay of the movie is great.

As the movie progresses, the emotional connect to the movie grows exponentially. The acting by Konkana Sen and Irfaan Khan is pretty strong and the best part about the script is that the movie is unbiased. The li'l bias can be felt only because the actors portraying the characters are "good guys". The facts are not twisted by Meghna Gulzar. The deeper you get into understanding the movie, you keep on losing faith in the legal system. And the fact that media can actually change the course of the justice is revolting.

The biggest irony of our country is that we fear to go to the police who are supposed to be our protector. This is shown in the movie very aptly. Fear, conspiracies, favourism, the misuse of power, the ego - everything that should not be the characteristic of the judicial system ideally, are present when it comes to the real world. The movie is slow and dark but leave you thinking about the things which you might not have thought before.

Though this is another form of media but it doesn't twist or hide the fact. Rather the director has come up with the movie to spread awareness about what is there and what needs to be there. Do watch this movie once.
